Storied Versace Mansion a Gastronomic Gem in South Beach

May 21, 2012

There is certainly no lack of architectural beauty in Miami, but the Versace Mansion on Ocean Drive is perhaps one of the most historic and grand homes in the Magic city. One Sotheby’s International Realty celebrates the famous mansion by taking a closer look at the interior and landscape of the landmark.

image

World-famous Ocean Drive is always buzzing.   Fancy cars show off on the short stretch of road, while beach-going pedestrians, partygoers and joggers flock to the sidewalks to see and be seen among South Beach’s Art Deco architectural gems.

Another gem sits quietly among the rest — a refined grand dame among its more casual cousins. The former home of Italian designer Gianni Versace is today a luxury boutique hotel, restaurant and event space with a remarkable history.

image

Alden Freeman, a Standard Oil heir, built Casa Casuarina in 1930.  The architect, author and philanthropist was inspired by the colonial design of the Alcazar de Colón, the former home of Diego Colón, son of explorer Christopher Columbus.  The 1510 original in Santo Domingo is the oldest known European dwelling in the Western Hemisphere.

Freeman didn’t get to enjoy his architectural re-creation for long.  After his death in 1937, Jacques Amsterdam brought the building. Over the decades, and with the downturn of local economy well into the 1980s, The Amsterdam Palace became a flophouse for artists.

In 1992, Italian couturier Gianni Versace purchased the property with the intention of restoring its splendor — and then some.  Versace also acquired the Revere Hotel next door, demolishing the Art Deco property to add a South Wing, pool and garden area.

Sadly, like Freeman, Versace himself didn’t enjoy the luxurious abode for long either.  In 1997, spree killer Andrew Cunanan murdered the acclaimed designer in cold blood at the footsteps of Casa Casuarina.  Cunanan shot himself later that day in a Miami Beach boathouse where he hid from law enforcement in hot pursuit.

In 2001, telecommunications magnate Peter Loftin purchased the property and turned it into a private club.  Lavish furnishings from the home sold for more at a Sotheby’s auction than the price tag on the property.

In December 2009, restaurateur Barton G. Weiss became the new owner of the historic Versace Mansion.

Today, The Villa by Barton G. offers 10 suites, cozy nooks and a rooftop lounge, complete with private butler service.  The 19,000 square-foot property pays homage to Versace’s style and flair, while remaining a luxurious oasis amid the hustle of Ocean Drive.

Traffic Patterns for Memorial Day Weekend in Miami Beach

Last year’s hotel occupancy on Memorial Day Weekend was the highest it has been in years so police are taking extra precautions to control traffic flow for the festivities. The Miami Herald reports some of the changes in traffic patterns you should expect when traveling to South Beach between May 25-28.

  • Come Friday of the holiday weekend, Ocean Drive will be closed, Collins Avenue will be one-way heading north, and Washington Avenue will be one-way heading south, creating a loop to control cruising and lead drivers into city parking lots. Roadblocks will be erected on many of the cross streets off Fifth, Ocean, Collins and Washington.
  •  The Venetian Causeway will be open only to Miami and Miami Beach residents, although restricted access will be based on the honor system.

Billy Joel's Miami Beach Home on the Market for $14.75 Million!

The Real Estalker has just announced that music legend and Miami luxury real estate owner, Bill Joel, is selling his stunning La Gorce Island mansion. Joel’s home of six years is just one of a number of celebrity properties being listed in South Florida this year.

image

Six time Grammy Winner Billy Joel’s home hit the market on Monday for $14.75 million according to The Real Estalker. The Mediterranean revival mansion boasts 7 bedrooms, 8.5 baths and 8,881 square feet. Joel bought the .67 acre home on La Gorce Island in February 2006 for $13.5 million.

This isn’t Joel’s first real estate venture. He has a history of purchasing, and sometimes flipping, high-end real estate. In 2002 he bought a Central Island, N.Y. estate for $22 million and in 2005 he bought a $5.9 million West Village, N.Y. apartment that he sold for $11.65 million in 2011.

Elin Nordegren Planning New Home in North Palm Beach

May 7, 2012

In a real estate market dotted with celebrities, Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods own some of the most extravagant properties in South Florida. According to MailOnline.com however, Nordegren has big plans for her massive North Palm Beach mansion.

image

Ex-wife of golf superstar, Tiger Woods, has started planning the dream home that will be built on the North Palm Beach location where her recently demolished mansion once stood.

Work on Elin Nordegren’s new oceanfront home has begun and plans reveal she is having a Zen-like koi pond built in the gardern.

There will also be waterfalls, a spa and an Olympic sized swimming pool. There is no mention of any golfing facilities.

Her master bedroom suite will be 1,200 sq ft and enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Sweedish born former nanny was criticized for destroying the former property but she insisted it would have taken too much work to restore the home which was not hurricane proof and infested with bugs.

Nordegren gave Habitat for Humanity of Martin County, a month to go through the structure and salvage tens of thousands of dollars worth of cabinets, hardware and fixtures.

DACRA’s Plans for the Miami Design District

Today, at a meeting of the Commercial and Industrial Association of South Florida, Steven Gretenstein presented DACRA’S plans for the future of the Design District, including the future of the Oak Plaza site. Until today, we knew little more than what Craig Robins and the DACRA P.R. machine had waxed poetic about, in vague but enticing terms. Now, we know a lot more. I’ve requested a copy of his presentation, which presents the somewhat radical but ultimately exciting future of the district, and I hope to post it here soon, to illustrate my description.

The core of DACRA’s plan is the current Plumer Alley, which is the pedestrian alley adjacent to Oak Plaza. Plumer Alley will be extended from 42nd Street to 38th, creating a  pedestrian street that stretches the full north/south length of the district. At both ends property has been secured for a department store, each potentially 3 stories in height.

image

This pedestrian street will be the core of the “new” Design District. It will be the “mall” that the various fashion retailers like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Cartier, will cluster around.

The character of the neighborhood, although densifying, will remain low-rise and a mixture of new and old construction.

Hermes, and perhaps other LVMH brands, will have its headquarters at Oak Plaza, in a building which is still being designed. At the moment, designs have the Hermes headquarters, which is what it is being called, at three stories. Presumably the trees will remain, as DACRA has taken such care to preserve them so far.

Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Celine, will open temporary locations by this summer on NE 40th Street, while their permanent locations are being constructed.

The lot behind the Post Office and Fendi Casa store will have a large city parking  garage, containing five hundred spots. Additional garages, as well as underground parking similar  to what currently exists under the Buena Vista and Melin Buildings will raise the number of new spaces to 2,000.

Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome, which Craig Robins restored and displayed at last year’s Design Miami Fair, will enclose the pedestrian entrance and exit to the new underground parking deck.

image

New facades are being given to many of the main DACRA buildings along NE 2nd, Including the 4100 Building, and the Buena Vista Building, by various haute-design architects.

The extensive landscaping plan will include a series of rooftop gardens on many of the retail buildings. The first garden is currently under construction, on top of the infill building that replaced the Enea Bamboo Garden. That building should be complete and occupied later this year.

image

DACRA is interested in the Design District’s connections with Midtown, Wynwood, and Buena Vista. Steve, specifically, is working on getting the city to install a street light at 36th street, to facilitate pedestrian access between the Design District and Midtown. When asked about DACRA’s opinion on the new Walmart, he said that European brands don’t see it as the threat that many Americans do, and left it at that.
